I reported this to Apple Support and was immediately transfered to a representative obviously trained for this kind of event, so there is a problem with these adapters, and you should pursue getting yours replaced via the website, and report your Wisconsin store for not addressing the problem. I'm posting this in reply to Steve Trabajars' comment above, especially because there was honestly no visible wear at all on the magsafe power adapter, and the surge protector was less than one year old, again, clean, no visible wear. Ironically, I was just complaining about this computer at BestBuy today, while looking for an extension cable for the power cord (the one it comes with is frankly too short), because it has been a lemon from the start.
The battery is practically shot, so I do keep the computer plugged. Prior to this incident, the magsafe power adapter had no visible wear whatsoever, no fraying at the magsafe connection to the computer, no nicks in the length of the cord itself, and the adapter and plug looked new just like the cable cord and magsafe connector. Thanking God that I was right there when it happened. I moved the power strip slightly, and the heavy adapter wiggled on the strip, zapped, shot out sparks and very small flames that extinguished right away after I removed it from the power strip, and poofed out a bit of smoke and soot all over the plug, the outlet, and the nearby plug for my iphone (which was fine, just soot-covered on one side).
Its curious to because this could be a potentially dangerous flaw too.My magsafe power adapter caught fire in the surge protector power strip, about 2 hours ago, at the site of the prong. Good Luck and I hope the new breed of chargers doesn't cost 79$ or fail so easily.

If you use heat shrink tubing instead (which I have had good results with in the past) make sure you slip it on before you start! Congrats on fixing a problem Apple should have never had! Please send me your ideas on how to make this a more friendly process, I would be very interested. In reality i think that I always pull on the cord to unplug the charger so I opted for hot glue hoping it would take better straight on yanks vs shrink tubing's side-to-side protection (who knows though).

You must be making a killing on these chargers. You can do it! Apple you should be ashamed of yourself. If they do not replace it then start working on this instructable. I would cite reviews on the apple store website if they do not replace yours. You may want to take your charger to apple straight away and see if they will replace this charger. If you use the tabs that fold out and allow you to wrap the cord around the brick you are probably reducing the life of you charger. Eventually the rubber sheath separates from the MagSafe connector or the Power-brick and the wire begin to fray or short, sometimes affecting charging and sometimes smoldering. The wimpy wire used in the design is simply to weak to take any real stress, coiling, and yanks. Apple really dropped the ball on the design of this charger.
